Blue School Head of School Announcement
Blue School is pleased to announce that Gina Farrar, PhD, will become its next Head of School effective July 1, 2017.
Gina is currently the Head of Williamsburg Northside Schools in Brooklyn, NY. Over the past four years, Gina has led Northside through a period of tremendous growth, while maintaining the warmth and connected spirit that is paramount to their community. It is this combination of spirit and tenacity, combined with Gina’s exceptionally rich work history in education with children ages two years old through high school that solidified our decision to engage her as Blue School’s next Head of School. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 1984, she began her career teaching math at Elisabeth Irwin High School (now LREI) in Greenwich Village for five years. Gina then pursued her doctorate degree in clinical and school psychology, and worked as a psychologist, clinical director and program director of both mainstream and special education early childhood programs, overseeing multiple sites for more than 18 years.
Gina's selection as Blue School’s next Head of School is the culmination of a thorough national search conducted by Educators’ Collaborative, and overseen by the Board Search Committee that included input and engagement from the entire Blue School community. Gina was identified as the absolute best candidate due to her strong philosophical alignment with Blue School’s core values, her wealth of expertise, sensitive and collaborative leadership style, and her commitment to inspiring diverse learning communities and fostering life-long professional development. Her success is grounded in a deep belief that children learn best when they feel respected and they are joyfully engaged. As Blue School enters its second decade, the Board, leadership and faculty agree that Gina is the right choice to expand on and refine the great work that has defined our school thus far and to continue to unify our community and extended constituents around children’s learning. We are thrilled to engage Gina as our next Head of School and look forward to introducing her to our extended community.

This next step in Blue School’s maturity is an exciting one and we are pleased to have Allison Gaines Pell’s continued leadership through this school year to support a smooth transition. The entire Blue School community is deeply appreciative of Allison’s visionary leadership during a time of critical growth and development for the school. Although we will undoubtedly miss Allison, we are thrilled for her and her family with her new and exciting appointment at The Wheeler School in Providence, RI, starting on July 1, 2017. Regarding Gina’s selection, Allison stated:
"I was delighted to learn that the Search Committee selected Gina Farrar as the next Head of School for Blue School. When I met with Gina, I found her to be warm, thoughtful, and intelligent. She knows how to ask the right questions and how to listen well, and she has ideas about ongoing learning, improvement, and problem solving that resonated with my own and in the spirit of Blue School’s culture. I am so glad that the Search Committee saw her as I did and that so many voices within our community agreed. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work with her over the course of the year to ensure a smooth transition, and to welcoming her to our amazing community.”
Please join the Board of Trustees, Search Committee and the entire Blue School community in celebrating this moment in Blue School’s history and welcoming Gina Farrar to our community!
From Gina Farrar -
“Blue School has been a leader in progressive education since its inception 10 years ago. I was initially drawn to Blue School, as it so openly acknowledged creativity as an important component of its mission. Creative ideas, in addition to academic mastery, are building blocks for having an impact on the fast paced world that will be our children's. When I first walked into Blue School, I was impressed by the incredible warmth of those I met. The students, the parents, the faculty, the administrators and the Board Members were kind and caring and clearly passionate about making Blue School the best it can be. Each group was excited to hear, from different perspectives, the characteristics important to the other in their next Head of School. The thoughtfulness, the authentic commitment to the mission from all that I met, as well as the collaborative spirit left me genuinely inspired. I could not be more excited than to work collaboratively with this community. It will be an honor.”
