Founding Director of Middle School

Blue School is expanding to middle school, adding 6th grade in 2015-16 and completing the expansion to 8th grade by 2017-18. As Blue School grows, we are seeking a creative, independent yet collaborative, pragmatic and visionary educator to serve as the director of the division and to work with the Head of School and other leadership team members to develop and then implement the program. In the first year, prior to opening the program, he or she would work with the Head of School and be responsible for:

  • Developing and writing a concrete vision for the program
  • Working with architects and designers to design educational spaces that fit the vision
  • Planning for and hiring staff
  • Building partnerships and relationships with NYC institutions to support the program
  • Leading admissions outreach initiatives

Please note that in the first planning year (2014-15), this position may be less than full-time, leading to full-time in the following year. As the program grows, the director will also be responsible for the daily administration of the program, including relationships with parents, communications, curriculum development, supervision of teachers, and development of the school’s approach.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of Masters in Education and degree in School Leadership a plus
  • Leadership experience desired
  • At minimum 5+ years as a classroom teacher
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate with multiple constituencies
  • Solid technology skills

Math Specialist

Reports to: Director of Curriculum, Primary Program

Broad Scope of Position:

The mathematics specialist is responsible for supporting and maintaining a coherent, engaging, and academically vigorous math program that is informed by the work of TERC and Math in the City. The Mathematics Specialist works directly with teachers as well as the Directors of Curriculum for our Primary and Middle School programs to develop and share instructional practices across the school, as well as to provide direct instructional support to students when needed.

This person will have:

  • Familiarity with TERC Investigations and Math in the City
  • Knowledge of early childhood education, performance based and standard assessments, constructivism, and integrated curriculum
  • Experience creating curriculum, pacing calendars, and coherent frameworks, as well as supporting and modeling implementation for teachers
  • Ability to work with teachers with openness and curiosity

This person will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with children, faculty, staff and parents
  • Organizing, documenting, and monitoring learning in the classroom context and through one-on-one instruction
  • Working with and supporting teachers in teams, PD, and with families

  • At least 5 years of classroom teaching experience
  • Masters in Education, with math education preferred

Director of Pre-Primary Program

We are seeking a creative, independent yet collaborative, pragmatic and visionary educator to serve as the Director of the Pre-Primary Program, and to work with the Head of School and other leadership team members to oversee and continue to develop our founding program. He or she will be responsible for the daily administration of the program, including relationships with parents, communications, curriculum development, supervision of teachers, and continued development of the School’s approach. He or she will:

  • Meet weekly with all teaching teams to reflect upon and improve practice and children’s experiences in their classrooms
  • Design and implement professional development
  • Conduct roundtables with parents in all classrooms
  • Oversee scheduling, programs, and the environment in the pre-primary program
  • Hire and supervise teachers in the program
  • Envision and implement programmatic elements, environments, events, and curriculum that reflects Blue School’s mission 
  • Serve as the “public face” of the program, greeting families and making connections with other school colleagues

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of Masters in Education and degree in School Leadership a plus
  • Leadership experience desired 
  • Knowledge of Reggio Emilia theory and practice desired
  • At minimum 7+ years as a classroom teacher 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate with multiple constituencies
  • Solid technology skills
